The tripartite meeting between the Republic of Cyprus, the Hellenic Republic and the Arab Republic of Egypt with the participation of the respective Ministers of Defence Dr. Christoforos Fokaides, Mr. Panos Kammenos and Mr. Sedki Sobhy, took place on the 14th of December 2017 at the Zenon Coordination Center
The main topics of the meeting were the regional cooperation on safety and security matters in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially matters that deal with marine and energy safety, the confrontation of terrorist attacks, illegal migration and of new asymmetric threads. Also, a mutual program of military cooperation with the participation of the three states in exercises and training was decided.
During the meeting, the Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and the Arab Republic of Egypt on Search and Rescue matters was signed, which is a part of the JRCC Larnaca’s goal for further development of the regional cooperation on matters related to marine safety.
Additionally, the JRCC in order to be able to respond and implement the foretold agreement and confront with any incident that might occur on carbohydrates platforms operating within the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus, but also of Egypt, has cooperated with Egypt and Greece during large scale Search and Rescue exercises (ARGONAFTIS and NEMESIS). In 2018 the exercises will be conducted in May and October, respectively.
The three Ministers decided the establishment of the tripartite meeting at least once a year, while a Permanent Coordination Committee will be formed to carry out the coordination of the materialization of the Meeting’s decisions.
